Driving Day Saturday

John Wayne and us pilgrims

sean searching for birds

We made it to Omaha by about 10pm CT.  Before we left Chicago area, we did a quick walk to a marsh trail near the Indiana Dunes campground and saw quite a few birds- a hummingbird!, a hawk scaring all of the bank swallows and several Great Blue Herons and egrets in a marsh pond.  The Nikon is working great! Getting great close ups and even one of Sean using the binocs to look at birds (slowing converting!).

We left indiana and travelled through our first midwest storm in Illinois cornfields– The sky got darker and darker. I woke up Sean just in case we needed to make some sort of evacuation for a freak tornado.  Sean got a great video with all of the lightning strikes– yes some were extremely close.  When we post the video and you listen to it, you will defintiely laugh at  how 2 city slickers without a clue about storms are basically acting like it’s the end of the world. Glad we were not in Chicago as the pics from there looked CRAZY (and had to evacuate Lollapalooza).

Alas, the 4 minute video (and the replay of it) spent the Nikon’s battery. Luckily we had my pentax optio which, while old, still could take pictures and not too bad either.

Going through Iowa was more fun than expected. the scenery is beautiful and the visitors center (Herbet Hoover) was  very clean and a helpful woman at the visitor desk advised me about John Wayne’s birthplace (we already had the Bridges of Madison Country on our to do list).  Well, this would ease the blow to Sean that the Field of Dreams was too far out of way to go to.

Sean took over at the wheel, zipped by an Iowa Sheriff without consequence and we continued to see the rolling hills of cornfields until we landed at Winterset and the covered bridges.

We went to 2 of 6 and they are very cool. You can even kayak or canoe the waters below each bridge and basically travel to each bridge by water.

There is much more to write but we have a LONG day ahead of us and are on a tight schedule to go to Henry Doorly Zoo, hit the road for Mt. Rushmore, SD and then drive up to Theodore Roosevelt National Park to camp (in ND). We will probably be out of wi-fi range for about 4 days or so as we will be heading to Glacier after ND but will try to post from phone as possible.

We are truly loving what we see and our detour through Winterset got us off the Interstate onto some gravel roads and truly middle of nowhere kind of scenery!

Our hotel is clean and has waffles for breakfast– I love that spinning waffle iron! We downloaded our pics to the computer and will try to post a few of our faves soon.

We probably have a good 14 hours of driving today but one thing on our side is we will cross into another time zone and therefore will have one hour more on our side!

Wish us luck we are driving with a mission today!

Glad you are enjoying your trek. There is a lot to see, I guess you have to select what’s most important to you to spend time at. Can’t wait to see you pix.
Maybe you can secure an extra battery so that when one runs out you can use the other while it’s being charged, but you have the other camera, so it’s not a biggie.
Don’t forget that you should check and c hange you oil as necessary as well as the water.
Is Omaha a nice city. Is there anything of interest beside the zoo to see?
Sounds like you are having a good time, best wishes on your adventures.

So, I guess you guys are “off the grid” now. I remember you saying you were heading for Glacier. Hope you’re having fun. Don’t forget to smell some roses.
